Video – When Thoughts Deceive

When Thoughts Deceive

A short video about how to recognize when our thinking mind is lying to us and using this understanding to be creative with with our thoughts through a deep connection to the body.

What I want to speak about now is how to recognize when you’re thinking mind is lying to you. And the way that you know that, the way you can be sure of that is to live in your body, just to keep your breath in your body, keep that part of your deeper awareness anchored inside in your body so that you can recognize how a thought changes the way you feel.

So a thought lies when you become contracted, when you feel tension, when you feel yourself becoming a little anxious, when you feel a sense of less space inside of you, when your breathing gets faster, I mean it can– when a thought really lies then you can be in intense anxiety, because only thought creates intense anxiety. So one of the questions you can ask yourself to try to understand the power, the impact, the result, the consequences of the way in which the mind lies is if you have a thought and it makes you feel contracted, produces a sense of anger or impatience, ask yourself this question, how creative am I right now? What has happened to my creative energy?

And you look inside and you see, well, I can’t find it right now. I feel like there’s nothing I know how to do or that I can contribute or to useful and that’s the simple proof right there that the mind is lying to you. And you can ask another question. You can say, so what is happening right now when I believe what my mind just told me about my friend and my companion and my career or my house, my body? What’s happened to my sense of resourcefulness?

Resourcefulness is our ability to solve problems. It’s our ability to see opportunities when there are always opportunities and to make choices that benefit us or and make choices that help support the goal that we’re attempting to achieve. And so you ask this question and you say, oh, I don’t feel resourceful now. I don’t see new options. I don’t see the positive here. I don’t see the opportunity.

So when you’re resourcefulness diminishes you know whatever you were thinking is a lie. And finally, the third question, the third essential question is, what has happened to my sense of relatedness or relationship?

When we are in a spacious present embodied state. There is a sense of connection to our own limitless depths. There’s a sense of spaciousness inside of us. At the same time, our perceptions are vivid. Our mind is calm, but what we see, what we sense is very clear.

And there’s a sense of connection, not just then to ourselves, but to everything around us and to people. And there’s an interest in people. We’re not looking at them through the lens of whether they make us feel safe, whether we approve of them, we’re just interested in them. These are other people and they– here’s a person with a different way of looking.

And so if the relational field is open, you know your mind is an alignment, you’re deeper mind, and your functional mind are in alignment. But if the relational field becomes narrow, if you feel distance from the other, judgment from the other, defensiveness. If you think you need to rationalize, then the relational field is diminished and that is certain proof that your mind is lying to you.

So when your creativity diminishes, when your sense of resourcefulness diminishes, when your sense of relational connection to yourself, the environment, the sounds, the colors, the breeze, and especially to other people, and how your listening, and how you’re communicating, you know that whatever structure of belief your mind as generated is a lie. It’s just simply deceiving you. It is not true. And you need to put your faith in that understanding that your body, your sense of creative energy, your sense of resourcefulness, and your sense of relational connection is going to show you without fail that your mind in lying.

So then when you see your mind is lying, we’ve looked at this practice, you just go thank you, you’re a wonderful deceiver. You want to make me feel unsafe. You want to create pain, and I’m not going there. Thank you.

So this little message, a way of evaluating when your mind is lying to you and giving you then a chance to come back to the timeless present moment in your deeper self that can always say thank you to what you’ve just witnessed your mind do, isn’t it amazing? Isn’t it amazing that it does that?

Hopefully, this will be helpful to you. Don’t go forward in your life believing that contractedness is real, that anger is real, that loss of creativity or resourcefulness or relational connection is real. It is proof of the unreality of whatever your believing about yourself or your situation in that moment.

Just want to let you know there’ll be a wonderful retreat and still a few spaces left in Lone Pine, California called Soul and Space. I used to take people on wilderness trips, 10 days in the wilderness, nine days in the wilderness, Soul in Space. But we’ll be out in Lone Pine, California where you’ll be looking out over vistas of hundreds and hundreds, thousands of square miles and right below one of the most rugged and mystical majestic mountain escarps that you can see anywhere in the United States, wonderful gigantic granite formations.
